Halloween is one of our favorite times of the year at the Collaboratory so we can’t wait for a special edition of our popular Open Tinker Lab!  All ages are welcome!  Choose from three sessions to explore some of the most popular hands-on experiences at the Collaboratory plus some special Halloween experiments.  NOTE: Given the open-ended nature of the format, children must be accompanied and supervised by their grown-up(s) during Open Tinker Lab.  In addition to the Collaboratory favorites, some of the highlights from this special Halloween edition will include:

  • Explore Newton’s Third law and how to fuel a rocket by designing and launching mini ghost pop rockets
  • Finally settle the debate about whether slime is a liquid or a solid as we make our own zombie snot (aka slime)
  • Discover what causes objects to change color with various light environments when we use a special polymer solution to make vampire veins
  • See physics in motion as you decorate your own paper pumpkins in our homemade giant spin art machine
  • No need for broomsticks this year – learn how we use a leaf blower to power a homemade Hovercraft that you can ride while using science to hover and glide across the room

Halloween costumes are optional (although encouraged!) and as always, we’ll have our imagination corner with dress-up costumes and props that kids are welcome to use while at the Collaboratory in case you decide to leave your costumes at home.  The events will last three hours each, and families are welcome to join us for any portion or the entire three hours during the section they choose during registration.   If you’ve never been to an Open Tinker Lab at the Collaboratory, here’s a bit more information about the typical format:

Children of all ages and their grown-ups are welcome to join us during Open Tinker Lab to explore, imagine, and create using a variety of supplies in an open-ended environment.  You can choose to come dive right in and do your thing, or we can have one of our certified teachers give you a guided tour of how the available tools and resources work best.  There are no silly questions  except the ones that aren’t asked!  We’d love to build on your curiosity…just let us know that you’d like to learn more!

Additionally, we are continuously inspired by how much children of all ages find excitement with experimenting through different art materials and processes.    Open Tinker Lab is purposefully curated so that children can learn how to foster their own curiosity and creativity.  Collaboratory provides accessible materials (revolving the types of materials available each week) without highly structured steps or directions so that children are free to experiment with new processes and tap into their own innate creativity.  Examples of materials include washable paint, pipettes/droppers, unconventional brushes and other painting tools, Play-Doh, plastic carving tools, dot dabbers, foam, etc.

We’ll make available a handful of selected kits and other materials such as robots (Cubetto, Sphero, Dash & Dot), modular electronic component blocks like Little Bits or Neurons, light box table, Makey Makey boards, and other Collaboratory favorites.  If you aren’t sure where to start, grab one of our teachers and we would love to explore with you!

Register below and please feel free to reach out with any questions about this event or more generally about the Collaboratory.  We can’t wait to meet you!
