Children of all ages and their grown-ups are welcome to join us during Open Tinker Lab to explore, imagine, and create using a variety of supplies in an open-ended environment. We will always have at least one (and often multiple) certified teachers present at Collaboratory to help get you and your child started. You’re welcome to come dive right in and do your thing, or we can give you a guided tour of how the available tools and resources work best. There are no silly questions except the ones that aren’t asked! We’d love to build on your curiosity…just let us know that you’d like to learn more!
Due to the popularity of Open Tinker Lab and finite space, we want to avoid overcrowding; attendees must pre-register online, over the phone, or in person prior to the start of Open Tinker Lab.
Collaboratory provides a broad spectrum of blocks and gears and other building materials for a variety of ages and developmental stages which help them to create structures, gadgets, and inventions in an environment that stimulates their creativity. Typically we have oversized soft blocks, wooden play tool sets, cardboard, wooden boards, legos, Magformers, gears, water tables, sand tables, hammers, nails, children’s electric drills, and a plethora of craft materials to customize and decorate.
Additionally, we are continuously inspired by how much children of all ages find excitement with experimenting through different art materials and processes. Open Tinker Lab is purposefully curated so that children can learn how to foster their own curiosity and creativity. Collaboratory provides accessible materials (revolving the types of materials available each week) without highly structured steps or directions so that children are free to experiment with new processes and tap into their own innate creativity. Examples of materials include washable paint, pipettes/droppers, unconventional brushes and other painting tools, Play-Doh, plastic carving tools, dot dabbers, foam, etc.
We’ll make available a handful of selected kits and other materials such as robots (Cubetto, Sphero, Dash & Dot), modular electronic component blocks like Little Bits or Neurons, light box table, Makey Makey boards, and other Collaboratory favorites. In addition to the resources above that can be checked out while visiting the Collaboratory, registration cost includes one make-and-take creation (e.g. slime, bath bombs, poured painting, etc.) Additional make-and-take creations can be purchased separately during your visit. If you aren’t sure where to start, grab one of our teachers and we would love to explore with you! Given the open-ended nature of the format, children must be accompanied and supervised by their grown-up(s) during Open Tinker Lab.
